Warm weather means early Calif. wine grape harvest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? There's no such thing as "normal" weather in California wine country, and vineyard operators say this year that truism could mean good news for wine lovers.

After cool temperatures slowed ripening and kept grapes on the vine until fall in recent years, growers in the nation's premier wine region are facing a heat wave that has made for one of the earliest harvests in recent memory.

"It has been a challenging year," said Michael Silacci, winemaker at Opus One in Napa Valley. "But it's shaping up to be an excellent year."

Weather hasn't been this warm across the region since 1997, a year that produced a highly regarded vintage. If the heat continues as expected it could mean fruit-intensive wines from an early and abundant crop.

"We're a full month ahead of 2009, '10 and '11," said Jon Ruel, COO at Trefenthen Vineyards and president of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers.

Dealing with changing weather patterns is part of the art of growing wine grapes, a long dance with the elements to achieve a precise combination of sugar levels and acidity expected from one of California's top commodities, a crop worth $3.2 billion on the vine last year, which created more than $34 billion worth of wine.

To bring in that harvest, growers are accustomed to being flexible. "There's no such thing as a normal year," Ruel said. "And this isn't a normal year."

Growers can remove leaves to let more sunshine hit fruit. They can drop clusters to improve flavors and quicken ripening in cool years. And they constantly monitor forecasts to know when an early shot of water will help get vines through a heat wave.

For this vintage, vineyard operators started picking grapes used to make sparkling wines this month, a move that came toward the end of August last year. And they're watching cabernet, merlot and pinot noir grapes, which are already in veraison, turning red and starting to ripen.

"Everything is moving at a faster pace," said Silacci, of Opus One, the cellar founded in 1979 by the Rothschilds of France and Robert Mondavi as one of the first for ultra-premium wine in the U.S.

Weather changes are a major factor that makes vintages distinctive. In the case of Opus One, the cool 2011 season produced a Bordeaux blend with herbal and fresh fruit notes. The weather was warmer in 2007, producing wines with the flavor of ripe fruit.

"We want every vintage of wine we make to give you a sense of time and place," Silacci said. "We're not making Budweiser, where a customer wants it to taste the same as the last can."

Growers faced an early harvest in 2004 because it was a relatively warm year. But because it was a very light crop, the grapes ripened quickly. This year's crop is much larger, so it won't ripen quite as early, growers say.

"We would worry that if we had a warm year and a low crop level we'd end up with excessive sugar and tannin development and a very early harvest," said Jason Haas of Tablas Creek.

"Higher yields mitigate against excessive sugar and tannins, which is great," he said, mentioning the compound that gives a dry and bitter finish to red wine.

The early harvest raises concern, however, for growers that rely on extended "hang time," the stint grapes spend on the vine. Many winemakers say time on the vine leads to complex flavors and a sense of place, called terroir.

In Lodi, Layne Montgomery of m2 makes zinfandel with mature flavors and relies more long hang times. He's planning for harvest three weeks ahead of normal. ("Whatever the hell normal is anymore," Montgomery said.) And the schedule gives him pause.

"I need as much time in the vineyard as we can get to get the great flavors," he said. "It's a little worrisome that things are looking so early."

But Montgomery's syrah grapes come from Amador County in the Sierra Foothills and have not endured as much heat. That vineyard is on a similar schedule to last year. And Haas expects to harvest his Rhone grapes in Paso Robles about a week ahead of last year's season.

If August weather goes as expected, "we should be right in line with what we saw last year," said Haas, who describes the 2012 vintage as "excellent."

EU formally lists Hezbollah military wing as terror group

BEIRUT: The European Union officially added Hezbollah?s military wing to its list of terrorist organizations Friday but noted that financial assistance to Lebanon would be unaffected by the decision.

Hezbollah is now listed with names such as Hasan Izz-Al-Din, a member of the Lebanese group allegedly involved in the 1985 hijacking of a Trans World Airlines flight.

The EU published its decision in the organization's official journal.

Hezbollah's military wing, also known as ??Jihad Council? (and all units reporting to it, including the External Security Organization),? was designated as a terrorist group.

However, the EU made it clear that the designation was separate from its ties with the Lebanese state as reiterated, on several occasions, by Ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst.

?The decision to designate the group does not affect legitimate financial transfers to Lebanon and the delivery of assistance, including humanitarian assistance, from the European Union and its Member States in Lebanon,? the EU said in its decision, which will be reviewed every six months.

Hezbollah regards the party as a single entity, with no separate political and military branches.

Eichhorst embarked this week on a series of talks with Lebanese officials including two members of Hezbollah following the unanimous decision by EU states to blacklist the Lebanese party?s military wing.

Speaking after his meeting with the EU ambassador, Hezbollah official Ammar Musawi said such a decision would have repercussions on the party?s ties with Europe.

Hezbollah?s Secretary-General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said Wednesday that the move would make the EU complicit in any Israeli attack on Lebanon or the resistance given that the designation would provide ?legal cover? for such aggression.

During her meetings with officials, Eichhorst maintained that the EU?s move would not affect ties with Lebanon but it was a ?clear political message? to Hezbollah that the organization would not tolerate terrorist attacks on its soil.

Service sector helps UK economy grow 0.6 pct in Q2

LONDON (AP) ? The British economy grew by 0.6 percent in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, largely on the back of a strong performance by the services sector.

The increase as reported by the Office for National Statistics was double the previous quarter's rate but in line with market expectations.

The quarterly performance will likely give the UK government a bit of breathing space amid ongoing criticism over its tough austerity policies. Critics say that despite the improvement in overall growth, many people in Britain are failing to see an improvement in their living standards.

The International Monetary Fund has suggested that the government might want to reconsider the pace of its austerity measures to help the economy, whose output was worth 1.4 trillion pounds ($2.1 trillion) in 2012.

lazy gal's guide : the family closet | the handmade home

Hello lovely friends! We?re?back again!

Once upon a time, I had these two closets in our home, that were crammed with stuff, and absolutely worthless in terms of storage {even through we?d already purged and rearranged fifty bazillion times.} Sometimes, insufficient things call for a change.

closet_before

When I tried to clean it out, it looked like this. And it gave me a headache.

toys_messy

A big one.

First world. Problems.

closet_boys_before

The other closet backed up to the first, in the playroom. With all of the boys? clothes crammed into it. Yes, it was reversed ? the boys liked keeping toys in ?their? closet. Their mother was always searching for missing clothing, because of said cramming, and knew there had to be a better way than searching for that missing shoe for the love of sanity and all things procrastination. Her youngest even missed an entire section of hand-me-downs from the older brother because they were misplaced, and he outgrew them. Any mother knows that?s a true, very sad, frustratingly tragic story.

Oh, and the icing on the cake? These closets were totally our original, delightful hue of builder?s beige.?So, while Jamin was out of town one day? I decided to take a hammer to that wall.

And by me, I mean I was balancing three kids and I wasn?t sure how to handle the rando box of closet wires, so I called a friend.

closet_redoAnd now, we will be calling in an electrician. Because sometimes, there?s nonsense things with lots of wires stuffed in your closet, and you need to do things finished to-code with a pro.

And we want to punch the dude who built our house in the throat.

electric_workObviously, we are not electricians, which is why we?re calling one.

But it looks a little sketch to me.

old_closet

closet demo

There was a dead mouse. There was squealing.

Maybe some of it came from me.

Sometimes, I?m a total girl.

closet_drywall

This is only 1/20th of the drywall that came down. I was too busy squealing over the mouse, to take a good photo of said drywall.

closet

And now we?re just waiting to take care of this. Our closet is all, Final Destination part 56 and I?ll be the death by DIY special edition. From rabies to electrical shock, we?ll keep ya posted. I?m convinced something else may slither out of those open walls in the meantime. {Hibby. Jibbies.}

You guys wouldn?t believe the difference knocking out a small wall in a closet will make in the way two entire rooms feel. No. Really.

In the meantime, what did I do with all that stuff?

We?re still in the process of changing things over, so I just haven?t updated you guys in a while. In the midst of the chaos that is a youth minister?s summer, and changing over an entire room (You guys should see our garage = Scary stuff.)?this process is slow? and sometimes tedious and excruciating.

In the process of change, you do what you do when you can to keep it manageable. But it feels like I?ve lost about two tons worth of junk in our lives. It feels so good, just to breathe. It?s a process. As any lifestyle change is. We don?t just wake up and change in a day. We reinvent ourselves. We purge, refine and reboot our systems again. We find ways to make it work.

As I?ve mentioned before, part of that is making this house work for us. We?re to the point where we?ve purged the bulk of it, and we?re staying with that process, but now we?re changing over a few things to make the things we kept more manageable.

People ask us when we plan to move, and I tell them we?re content to stay where we are right now, even though we?re running tight on space. And then I catch myself mid-thought, again: Space, as it pertains to what? Whose standard of space? As I?ve mentioned here before, square footage is all relative, and it?s been quite the enlightening process.

mexican_drug_lord_and_crayons

So, making a lifestyle change includes the whole family if we want to make it permanent and successful.?I?m on my second pass of the toy closet, but particularly with our just-turned-four-year old,?I usually feel like this.?I?ve realized we have lots of large toys that are bulky and for toddlers. It?s time to donate and move on.

So remember?Emerson?s closet we changed into storage for all of her toys? We decided to move her clothes, as well.

pink_bedroomWhat I?m about to show you is in no way easy on the eyes. It is what it is for now. I guess a real example that you don?t have to be HGTV for a legit, functioning closet. And you guys wouldn?t believe the ease of getting ready for church on Sunday mornings. I was all, SCORE! My life just got easier. I can?t wait to try it out for school. When I mentioned this in her room reveal, you guys wanted to know more, so? rather than waiting to redo this a-la California dream Closet, I thought I would share what we have now. I purged a little more, and reorganized all of our clothes.

Here?s our closet once upon a time in this post.?Note that compared to the second photo, I couldn?t even back all the way up to take said shot?{PS. I just checked the archives and realized I?ve been on this mission for nearly a YEAR? I?m kind of excited!}

This is a little embarrassing?. like showing someone your dirty laundry? {At least this is clean?}

Yes, the florescent light gives me hives, and I want to get rid of that final bout of beige {We will have a party when we paint the final one} but for now, we?re keepin? it real:

family_closet_kids

I realize that our closet is probably a bit larger than most. It?s a real asset to our home, ?and it needs a LOT of work. But the important part? I know where everything is. Color coded and categorized, with my own system, from linens to school uniforms? we are ready. It probably looks a little crowded right now, but its honestly the most spacious it?s felt in years.

family_closet

All of their shoes, all of their hanging clothes {Play clothes are staying in their rooms} Are here. Jamin?s are on the left, mine on top, Emerson?s on the right, and the boys? on the bottom. My clothes once dominated that entire end, and now I share it with the boys.?I even placed the boys? matching clothes in the middle of their two sections, so that I can easily dress them alike for church, though I?m pretty sure my time for that with my borderline eight-year-old is coming to an all-too-soon-close. {Riding the cash cow to the bank while I can}?It?s easier for me to keep tabs on what they?ve grown out of, and what needs to be switched out. The key to keeping this space organized will eventually be well-planned shelving. But in the meantime, we?re loving the change.

You want to know the weird part? I?d been digging through my closet, pitching a fit about not having anything to wear for months. I got rid of more, and now I can actually see what I own. I?m slowly sifting through it, in stages. No, I will probably never get those jeans re-fitted = Donate. No, I will probably never wear that shirt again, because it makes me look preggers = Goodbye. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

I can put outfits together that I never thought of before. I know this looks like a lot, and I guess it is compared to some. The thing is, I?m actually not a total clothes horse. Paint covered yoga pants are my thing in nearly-eleven years of marriage until this past fall/winter. From maternity, to clothes that don?t fit me anymore, and everything in between? I was a bit of a hoarder.

tank_top_problem

It?s not perfect, but it works for now. It?s function. Without the form. ;}

And I may still have a little bit of a tank top problem.

So what about you guys? Do you have a family closet? Have you called in the pros for something seemingly small that can be a little scary? Any questions for my super ugly yet fully functional space that I?m oh so super excited about? Spill it! We?d love to hear!

Have an inspired day, y?all!

Trade sees big move in Japan ETF

A large trader is counting on a big move up or down by the iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund.

optionMONSTER's Depth Charge system detected the purchase of 45,000 August 11 puts for the ask price of $0.06 yesterday. This is clearly a new position, as its volume was far above the strike's open interest of 8,854 contracts before the trade appeared.

About two minutes later, a block of 495,000 EWJ shares was bought for $12.1009. The combination of stock and options creates a delta-neutral position, meaning that the trader is looking for shares to move sharply in either direction with higher volatility. (See our Education section)

The EWJ, which has certainly seen its fair share of volatility in recent months, was up 0.5 percent to $12.04 yesterday--its highest close since May 22. The exchange-traded fund fell more than $2 in the next two weeks as Japanese stocks plunged, and but it has been climbing since then.

More than 95,500 EWJ options changed hands overall yesterday, compared to the daily average of fewer than 28,000 in the last month.

Viewfinder Organizes Your iPhone Photos and Makes Sharing Easy

iOS: When it comes to organizing and sharing your iPhone photos, things are pretty messy with the default app. Viewfinder is an app that hopes to make that process a bit simpler by leveraging your metadata as an organization tool, and providing an easy way to share photos with select people.

Viewfinder is a simple way to organize photos. With it, you can quickly search for photos based on where or when they were taken. Outside of that, you can also share select groups of photos with friends. Within the sharing ecosystem you can chat about photos, star them to save them to your own library, and keep track of your friends photos easily both online and in the app. It works a bit like iPhoto with its shareable photo streams, but the ability to chat about photos makes it worth checking out if you're interested in sharing large groups of photos with friends.

Faster Wi-Fi deployed with launch of iPad program at prep school

News

July 16, 2013 08:00 AM ET

Computerworld - The emergence of faster Wi-Fi on the 802.11ac standard has been a big hit with schools and universities that have struggled with slower networks because of the enormous influx of data-sucking smartphones, tablets and laptops used by students.

"We're amazed at the performance of ac. We've been on [802.11n] before and ac is drastically better for actual performance," said Chris Carey, technology director at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Calif.

Carey recently began a limited deployment of about five 802.11ac access points on the school's 28-acre campus. Eventually, all 160 of the school's existing 802.11n AP's could be replaced as the school launches a new initiative this fall to loan each of its 1,650 students an iPad. The iPad usage will put added strain on the Wi-Fi networks on top of of all the smartphones and personal laptops that the students already carry, Carey said.

Carey said he hopes for a potential of three times the speed of 802.11n with the new APs on 802.11ac, but the bigger need will be to deal with the density of hundreds of wireless devices in a relatively small area of classrooms. "Having more bandwidth is the key, even though the throughput is much better with ac," he said.

The first areas to get ac speeds and bandwidth will be the school's robotics and computer science labs, where the "students are way out there" in using data over wireless, Carey said.

While most 802.11ac is advertised as offering theoretical speeds of 1 Gbps, the realistic speeds Carey is hoping for are 5 Mbps, still a huge improvement.

Bellarmine decided to purchase its 802.11ac APs from Meru Networks, which claims it can triple the data rates of 802.11n. Meru on Tuesday announced it will begin shipping the AP 832 on the 802.11ac specification this quarter at a list price of $1,295, but reduced to $499 if a customers is making an upgrade from an existing Meru 802.11n AP.

Bellarmine can save on the lower cost for an upgrade from existing Meru 802.11n APs, and won't have to upgrade its existing Power over Ethernet switchin -- a further cost savings over other Wi-Fi vendors, Carey said.

Meru is rated about fifth in sales in the Wi-Fi gear market, behind market leader Cisco, but Meru has a global presence, and Carey said Meru has produced great products and provides "awesome" support.

Carey said Meru also uses a special single channel design in its APs which means that he can obtain better throughput than with overlapping channel designs in competing products. An airport near the school causes radio interference, and the school is forced to rely on two 80MHz channels in the Meru APs, which isn't possible with the overlapping 40MHz channels of other products.

The AP 832's single channel design sends data across two dual-band radios that transmit in the 5 GHz band, Meru said.

Meru identified the University of Houston as another AP 832 customer as well as an unnamed K-12 school district in the Northeast with 240 schools and 150,000 students.
