BEIRUT: The head of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Judge Sir David Baragwanath and Vice-President Judge Ralph Riachy have been re-elected for a period 18 months, a statement from the STL said Friday.
The statement said that Baragwanath, from New Zealand, had been unanimously re-elected as president of the international court for a period of 18 month starting from September 1, 2013.
The judges of the Appeals Chamber, who met Thursday, also re-elected as Vice-President Judge Ralph Riachy from Lebanon, for the same time period.
The STL is probing the Feb. 14, 2005 car bomb in Beirut which killed 23 people, including the former prime minister of Lebanon, Rafik Hariri.
Baragwanath was elected president of the Tribunal on 10 Oct. 2011, succeeding Judge Antonio Cassese, while Riachy has served as STL vice-president since March 2009.
The tribunal has indicted four Hezbollah members in the attack. However, the four men remain at large. Hezbollah denies any involvement in the killing.
The president of the Tribunal has a wide range of tasks, including oversight of the effective functioning of the court and the good administration of justice, as well as representing the STL in relations with states, the United Nations and other entities.
In the president's absence, his duties are fulfilled by the vice-president.
