Analysts skeptical over China exports

China?s unexpected surge in exports last month renewed concern from analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc, UBS AG and Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd (ANZ) that statistics from the nation can be unreliable.

The 14.1 percent gain from a year earlier was the biggest positive surprise since March 2011, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The increase did not match goods movements through ports and imports by trading partners according to UBS, while Goldman Sachs and Mizuho Securities Asia Ltd cited a divergence from overseas orders in a manufacturing index.

Smaller trade gains could signal a less robust recovery from a seven-quarter slowdown just as Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan says the economic rebound is a sign of improving global demand.

Accurate statistics from the world?s second-biggest economy are increasingly important for domestic and foreign investors and for China?s government, chief Greater China economist at ANZ in Hong Kong Liu Li-gang (???) said.

?China?s influence on the global economy has become bigger, so not only Chinese policy makers, but also business people and the rest of the world need better data,? Liu said. ?Unreliable data could have a negative impact on resource allocation and business planning.?

The Beijing-based customs administration, which reported last month?s trade figures on Thursday, said it could not immediately respond to a faxed request from reporters for comment on the banks? skepticism.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (???), who is expected to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao (???) in March, was quoted in 2007 as saying he watched data on power, rail cargo and loans because GDP numbers were ?man-made.? Li?s remarks were in a US diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks in late 2010.

After China?s statistics bureau reported third-quarter GDP in October last year, Standard Chartered Plc analysts said the 7.4 percent increase was ?too good to be true? when compared with the slowdown in electricity production and the readings of a manufacturing index, while London-based Capital Economics Ltd said its own analysis indicated expansion of about 6.5 percent.

The median forecast for last month?s exports in a Bloomberg survey of 40 economists was for a 5 percent gain, with the highest estimate at 9.2 percent, after last November?s 2.9 percent growth. Goldman Sachs, ranked by Bloomberg as the most accurate forecaster for the indicator, projected a 7 percent rise.

The increase, which was the biggest since May last year, could indicate exporters? rush to finish year-end orders and government pressure to report exports before the end of the year to reach the government?s target of 10 percent growth for last year, Mizuho?s Hong Kong-based chief Asia economist Shen Jianguang (???) said in a note on Thursday.

?It is possible that local governments may have tried to boost exports data by either making round trips in special trade zones? or by exporting ?earlier than otherwise in an attempt to improve the annual exports data,? Goldman Sachs? Beijing-based economists Yu Song and Yin Zhang wrote the same day.

Rushed shipments and even faked exports to secure tax refunds may have contributed to the stronger growth data, according to Alistair Thornton and Ren Xianfang (???), Beijing-based analysts at IHS Inc.

UBS economists led by Hong Kong-based Wang Tao (??) pointed to a ?quite obvious discrepancy? in the growth of China?s exports to Taiwan and South Korea and those economies? reported imports from China in recent months, even as historically they have tracked each other well.

Florida Governor Scott Returned Rescue Dog He Used For Photo Op In 2010 Campaign

By Alan with comments January 14, 2013 20:41

The Tampa Bay Times was trying to find out why ?Reagan? was never seen after Rick Scott was elected.

Asked last week what had happened to the dog, Scott?s current and former communications directors refused to answer?

On Monday, the Times asked the governor to clear up the mystery.

?He was a rescue dog,? Scott said, ?and he couldn?t be around anybody that was carrying anything, and so he wouldn?t get better.?

Scott said Reagan never bit anyone but ?scared the living daylights? out of people at the mansion. He said one kitchen employee threatened to quit and photographer Eric Tournay was frightened when the dog ?barked like crazy? every time he saw him with a camera.

So the Scotts gave the dog back to his prior owner, Scott said, about a month after the family moved to Tallahassee. The governor?s office on Monday told the Times it was trying to find Reagan and its new family?

After learning that Times reporters had talked to the governor, a spokeswoman called to say Reagan had been returned about a year ago to All Pets Grooming and Boarding, a business in Naples.

Poet Sharon Olds wins T.S. Eliot award

LONDON (Reuters) - American poet Sharon Olds won the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry on Monday for "Stag's Leap", a critically acclaimed collection that traces the end of her marriage 15 years ago.

The annual award, celebrating its 20th anniversary, goes to what a panel of poets decides is the best collection of verse published in the United Kingdom and Ireland each year, and is considered to be one of the world's top poetry prizes.

Stag's Leap, published in Britain by Jonathan Cape, was chosen from a record 131 submissions and a shortlist of 10.

"From over 130 collections, we were particularly impressed by the strong presence of women on the list and were unanimous in awarding the 2012 T.S. Eliot Prize to Sharon Olds' Stag's Leap," said Carol Ann Duffy, chair of the judges.

Duffy, also Britain's poet laureate since 2009, called the work "a tremendous book of grace and gallantry which crowns the career of a world-class poet."

Olds wins a cheque for 15,000 pounds ($24,000) for the prize, which is administered by the Poetry Book Society and supported by the estate of leading 20th century poet T.S. Eliot whose works include "The Waste Land".

When her marriage ended, Olds, now 70, promised her children she would not write about the divorce for 10 years. In fact, it took her 15 years to get around to publishing a collection which some critics said was her best yet.

"Olds, who has always had a gift for describing intimacy, has, in a sense, had these poems thrown at her by life and allowed them to take root: they are stunning - the best of a formidable career," wrote Kate Kellaway in The Observer.

The critic added that the collection was surprisingly kind considering its subject matter.

In "Unspeakable", from Stag's Leap, Olds writes:

"He shows no anger,/I show no anger but in flashes of humor/all is courtesy and horror. And after/the first minute, when I say, Is this about/her, and he says, No, it's about/you, we do not speak of her."

Olds was born in San Francisco in 1942 and her first collection of poems, "Satan Says" (1980), received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award.

She went on to win a string of other prizes and currently teaches creative writing at New York University.

Graphene plasmonics beats the drug cheats

Jan. 13, 2013 ? Wonder material graphene could help detect the presence of drugs or toxins in the body or dramatically improve airport security, University of Manchester researchers have found.

Writing in Nature Materials, the scientists, working with colleagues from Aix-Marseille University, have created a device which potentially can see one molecule though a simple optical system and can analyse its components within minutes. This uses plasmonics -- the study of vibrations of electrons in different materials.

The breakthrough could allow for rapid and more accurate drug testing for professional athletes as it could detect the presence of even trace amounts of a substance.

It could also be used at airports or other high-security locations to prevent would-be terrorists from concealing explosives or traffickers from smuggling drugs. Another possible use could be detecting viruses people might be suffering from.

Graphene, isolated for the first time at The University of Manchester in 2004, has the potential to revolutionise diverse applications from smartphones and ultrafast broadband to drug delivery and computer chips.

It has the potential to replace existing materials, such as silicon, but University of Manchester researchers believe it could truly find its place with new devices and materials yet to be invented.

The researchers, lead by Dr Sasha Grigorenko, suggested a new type of sensing devices: artificial materials with topological darkness. The devices show extremely high response to an attachment of just one relatively small molecule. This high sensitivity relies on topological properties of light phase.

To test their devices, researches covered them with graphene. They then introduced hydrogen onto the graphene, which allowed them to calibrate their devices with far superior sensitivity than with any other material.

Testing for toxins or drugs could be done using a simple blood test, with highly-accurate results in minutes. The researchers found that the sensitivity of their devices is three orders of magnitude better than that of existing models.

The academics, from the School of Physics and Astronomy, hope the research will show the practical applications from an emerging area of research -- singular optics.

Dr Grigorenko said: "The whole idea of this device is to see single molecules, and really see them, under a simple optical system, say a microscope.

"The singular optics which utilise the unusual phase properties of light is a big and emerging field of research, and we have shown how it can have practical applications which could be of great benefit.

"Graphene was one of the best materials we could have used to measure the sensitivity of these molecules. It is so easy to put the hydrogen on to it in controlled way.

"We are only starting to scratch the surface of what this research might tell us but it could have profound implications for drug detection, security and viruses."

Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov won the Nobel prize for Physics in 2010 for their groundbreaking work on graphene.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

The process required to facilitate a working affiliate program is much more simple than many people lead themselves to believe. When you are using technology that allows you to use your marketing skills, you can do this cheaply. Use the informative tips found in the article below to guide you in the needed steps to get started in affiliate marketing.

Keep in mind who you?re targeting when you choose affiliate partners. You should pick affiliates that offer complementary products. Your probable customers are visiting your page for an exact reason, with particular products in mind. You can make that an advantage to your business by selecting advertisers that fit the needs of your visitors.

Tracking services vary in dependability. Choose one that is legitimate and suits your website needs. If you don?t have a legitimate tracking service, calculations can often be misconstrued, causing you to lose money. Using a tracking service consistently will save you the hassles of arguing with your affiliates or checking the data yourself. It is worth the price that you will have to pay for the service.

Create an e-book, and then post it to websites established for document sharing. You can show your knowledge by doing this, and you can also attract visitors and potential customers to your site. Your completed document should include multiple links that will take the reader to your website.

When evaluating potential affiliate partners, you should approach the task with a well-defined understanding of your target market. This can have an effect on your traffic, as well as showing viewers that you understand what they want and need.

You should choose an affiliate that offers several ways to access your payments. There are a variety of methods companies employ to pay their affiliates. Some also require that you have reached a certain dollar amount before they will pay you. Payment options include direct deposit, traditional checks, and online options like AlertPay and PayPal.

Communication with affiliate partners is extremely important for fostering a good working relationship that is mutually beneficial. You will find that communicating with your affiliates benefits your income flow. Your best affiliate partners are invaluable and thus are worth the extra effort.

Keeping a broad spectrum of advertising methods can really help you stay ahead of the game. Many people shop online to get the items that they need. Some people will respond better to fliers. Another group may be waiting for a discount offer before they decide to buy. Choosing multiple types of advertising can help you reach more members of your target audience.

Boost your sales by ensuring your site has plenty of links, but also be sure that those links are relevant to the content being provided. If your link reads ?Amazon Kindles?, visitors aren?t going to want to click it and land on a page selling MP3 players. Advertising your website as something it is not will not help you and your audience will not trust you.

Try choosing an affiliate company who has higher sales conversion ratios. Target a one percent conversion ratio for your benchmark.

Go with affiliate companies that actively support their affiliates with resources that help sell the product. These companies are not clueless about sales and marketing. They take great care to actively research the most effective types of marketing. Many top rated companies share data with their affiliates, meaning the affiliates are able to customize programs and increase the attractiveness of their product.

You?ll probably find that it takes a while to find effective affiliate advertising strategies to target your demographic. Media-heavy advertisements are suitable for some audiences, but others may prefer rather unobtrusive advertisements. Consider your customers wants and needs when you pick what ads you will use.

Use an affiliate marketing program to more effectively promote your online business. The advertising benefits of a good affiliate program are superior to alternatives like contextual networks or banner ads. As you work to select your affiliate program, consider the rate of payment you?ll be receiving, how easy it is to navigate, and how popular its products are.

Some websites might try to scam their clients by getting them to use their tracking system. Do not fall for this; use one that is tried and true.

Knowing your audience well is the best way to achieve success in affiliate marketing. Everything from your marketing to your content should be designed with your audience in mind. Know what attracts them to your site. What interests your readers?

Keeping tabs on where your links perform well is important in managing your affiliate marketing. Consider placing the link in different areas of the page, or within different parts of the article. You can use the same one just mix it up, especially where the link is.

A lot of affiliates end up losing valuable time by having to re-read emails that contain instructions for tasks to be completed. Instead, become more productive by copying the key points that you need for future reference from the email and paste into one word processing program, so that in effect you?ll have one list. Referring to a single document will increase productivity.

Look for affiliates that can further your business plan not only as partners but also as providers. Using a range of affiliate networks should provide you with multiple streams of income. Research the affiliate programs thoroughly before working with them. You need to know that you will feel comfortable promoting their products.

Often you need to spend some money to make a little money, especially if you?re a new affiliate marketer. Continue to reinvestment money into affiliate marketing ventures to gain further growth. Some of the best sites to do so are Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook.

Be honest with your customers about affiliates. Being honest shows that you respect your customers and they are sure to appreciate that.

Today, getting started with affiliate marketing is easier and less expensive than ever. Follow the advice offered here to keep costs down and ensure your success.
